Synopsis
:
This thesis is entitled “Itsumi and Sayuri's Process of Individuation in Akiyoshi
Rikako's The Dark Maidens”. The objectives of this research are to describe Itsumi
and Sayuri's individuation process, and to determine the individuation process that
dominates each character by using Carl Gustav Jung's collective unconscious
theory. This research uses descriptive qualitative method because the data focuses
on understanding data analysis and produces detailed research. The writer uses a
psychological approach because the process of individuation is concerned with
psychological problem. The results of the study shows that Itsumi and Sayuri
experience an individuation process or the process of self-discovery in order to
maintain their image in the eyes of society. They cover themselves with a persona
mask by showing their good side that others can well receive. Behind that persona
mask lies the shadow, the dark side of each individual's personality hidden in the
subconscious. They cover up their true nature behind their facade. Itsumi's betrayal
makes her develop an ego that has been taken over by the shadow. Her revengeful
and rebellious nature makes her persona mask crumble. The shadow also takes over
Sayuri's ego. Her treacherous nature and desire to get rid of Itsumi make her persona
mask also destroyed. They let the shadow dominate and hence, they often exhibit
behaviors that are usually suppressed, resulting in irrational or destructive actions.
Moreover, they also learn to realize their animus. Finally, it can be concluded that
this novel portrays how an individual can experience the development of a negative
individuation process.
