Synopsis
:
In Joker (2019), language is used as a reflection of Arthur Fleck's
social alienation, where his dialogues are often full of pauses and anxieties that
reflect his mental instability. The deixis in Joker's dialog shows the tension between
himself and his social environment, especially through the use of pronouns and
place markers that are ambiguous and contextual. The current researcher's aims are
to analyze how mental health issues, social inequality, and individual alienation are
represented in modern society. In this research, this character is portrayed as
someone who has a mental disorder, but is not well supported by the public health
system. The main theory that researchers can use is from George Yule. This theory
classifies deixis into several types, namely: person deixis, spatial or place deixis,
temporal deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. The method used is content
analysis, one example of the use content analysis that can be used to analyze
research is exploring deixis in dialogue or conversation in script. In the research that
researchers conducted on deixis analysis from Joker movie (2019), the main findings
relate to how the elements of deixis are used by characters, especially Arthur Fleck.
This research is entitled "ANALYSIS OF DEIXIS IN MAIN CHARACTER
ARTHUR FLECK "JOKER" (2019) by Todd Phillips". This research entitled
"Analysis of Deixis in Arthur Fleck's Main Character 'Joker' (2019) by Todd
Phillips" examines the use of deixis in the movie to understand its contribution to
the narrative and character development. Using Stephen Levinson's (1981)
framework, the study identified five types of deixis - person, spatial, temporal,
social, and discourse deixis - used in the dialog of Arthur Fleck, the main character.
The findings reveal that person deixis, specifically first-person pronouns, are the
most frequently used, highlighting the reflective and isolated nature of Arthur.
Spatial, temporal, and social deixis give contextual depth to his interactions, while
discourse deixis was not found. This research shows the importance of deixis in
pragmatics to interpret meaning and narrative dynamics in cinematic texts.
