Synopsis
:
This thesis is about the hallucination experiences by Emily in Alexandra
Potter's Me and Mr. Darcy since this novel depicts implicitly the
hallucinations using Emily’s perspective. Hallucination is defined as a false
perception where a person feels they see, hear, touch, smell, and taste
something that does not exist in the real world. To restrict the discussion,
the researcher will only focus on analyzing the factors, forms,
characteristics, and how to overcome the hallucination experiences by
Emily. The qualitative analysis method is used in this thesis. The researcher
attempts to use a psychological approach to reveal the hallucination of the
main character. The analysis is empowered with several theories
concerning hallucinations, for example, Veague's theory about types of
hallucinations and several other theories that explain the causal factors,
characteristics, and way to escape from hallucination. It is discovered that
Emily's hallucination is caused by a traumatic event that she experiences
when the four men she dates end up disappointing her. Emily experiences
hallucination of meeting Mr. Darcy as a form of distraction from her
traumatic experience. The type of hallucination that Emily experiences is a
multimodal hallucination. The characteristics that indicate Emily is
experiencing hallucination are she experiences sensory experiences, she
believes in the truth of the experiences, and the absence of the real object
of her hallucination. Emily can escape the hallucination after she can
overcome her trauma by having the courage to fall in love again
