Synopsis

:  This study aims to investigate the signs of virtues, vices, and supernatural that are contained in Indonesian folktale and American folktale. To complete it, the study chose 2 folktales, entitled Raksasa Penjaga Gunung Merapi from Indonesia and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, from America, as materials used to determine the signs of virtues, vices, and supernatural by using Pierce's semiotics approach. In this study uses a qualitative approach to describe the semiotic phenomena of signs of virtues, vices, and supernatural from these two folktales. This study uses Aristotle's theory to analyze virtues and vices. Moreover, analyzes the supernatural using the theory of Jonathan C. Smith. The result from the analysis is that the study divided virtues into nine types, namely courage, temperate, generous, humility, patience, truthfulness, witty, friendliness, and modesty. Vices are divided into seven types, namely, cowardice, insensible, stingy, lack of spirit, understatement, surly, and shyness. Moreover, finally, the supernatural is divided into six, namely telekinesis, extrasensory perception (telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition), psychokinesis, mediumship, astrology and fortune telling.
